A Waiheke resident who has paid around $35 million to develop an approved subdivision on rural Thompson’s Point is promising improved environmental outcomes to go with the luxury houses.

Chris Jacobs, who “retired” to the island in 2015, has bought a 38ha block from long-time farm owners Colin and Jillian Devine, who earlier this year obtained resource consent for a 25-lot lifestyle subdivision. The ability to subdivide had been settled in 2012 after a long-running planning battle that ended in the Environment Court with an amendment to the island’s district plan and the setting of a “development framework”. • Geoff Cumming
