A water quality tax is on Auckland Council’s wish list for its 10-year budget, which, if approved, will see fresh investment in sorting out Waiheke’s leaky septic tanks.

A targeted water rate likely to cost the average Auckland household around $1.30 extra per week, is to be included in the council’s 10-year budget to be agreed in June. It could free up as much as $400 million for the council to provide critical infrastructure improvements for the super city’s polluted waterways. • Richard Jones
