Residents above Blackpool beach reported seeing and hearing a shining bronze cuckoo, pipiwharauroa, last week for the first time since autumn.
Like the godwits, also back recently from their breeding grounds in Alaska, the bird is a sign of spring. The cuckoos spend the winter in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands but breed throughout New Zealand during our summer.
