Class of ‘87: Te Huruhi Primary School staff during the first official year of the school with, front-row centre, the school’s first principal, Garland Punler.
Plans are underway for a celebration to mark the 25th anniversary of Te Huruhi Primary School, which first welcomed pupils in 1986 and was officially opened on 13 March 1987.

A ‘Twilight Gala’ at the school on Saturday 10 March will be the focus of celebrations and will be an event for the Waiheke community to enjoy and participate in, says board of trustees member Pia Mancia.

“Te Huruhi has been a thriving hub of learning at the centre of our community for the last quarter of a century and thousands of us, on the island and further afield, have had an association with the school. We want to invite everyone to the school to celebrate.”

The gala will extend through the afternoon and evening with something for the whole family to enjoy.

“We’re planning lots of carnival style stalls for kids, fabulous food and drinks, a pool party, plenty of music and entertainment and later on a licensed bar, and we have a big surprise up our sleeves for after dark,” says Pia.

Organisers are calling for groups or individuals who are interested in performing in any capacity, whether on stage or providing street style entertainment, to get in touch as soon as possible.

“There is such a wealth of talent on Waiheke; we’d love to hear from dance groups, bands, jugglers, stilt walkers…anyone who can help make this event truly one to remember.”

Offers of help with any aspect of event organisation from catering and sound systems to rubbish collection and even pool life guarding will be gratefully received.
