Maumahara Flames, held last Sunday, gave Waiheke residents the chance to come together as a community to celebrate Matariki and to remember those who have crossed into the star world.

“The main emotion we wanted people to feel was remembrance,” said event facilitator George Kahi.

The lighting of the flames paid homage to the Matariki star cluster and signalled the end of the festival in a finale that included a fireworks display and the mass singing of E Pari Ra – a song written 100 years ago in remembrance of fallen soldiers.

“It was a successful night on all levels,” said George. “Everyone enjoyed a big pot of kumara soup. I was really appreciative to see people come together, and to watch the fireworks bring a smile to the faces of those who came out.” •
