Waiheke’s sky could be part of a world-leading Auckland area dark skies bid, according to Dr John Barentine, director of conservation for the International Dark Sky Association.

Dr Barentine visited the island last month and met community members, local board representatives and our own dark skies team at Piritahi Hau Ora to discuss Waiheke’s bid for accreditation as a dark sky place and to offer solutions to protect the stars from light pollution. • Richard Jones
