Award-winning journalist and keen free-diver and spearfisherman Jim Mahoney revisits the gulf he knew as a boy.

The islands of the gulf appear to float slightly above the horizon in the heat haze as our family sunbathe on the beach, bodies dark brown, school a distant memory for we younger members. A long, slow swell greets us as, overheated, we plunge into the cool, clear water, yelling and shrieking with delight as the waves crest and break in front of us.
